It was while being given a lift along the seafront, back in 1973, when Philip first noticed that the shadows of people sitting in deckchairs told a story within the mere changes of colour in their stripes. Here he is, in a photograph by Roger Bamber, pretending to show how he works. However, it is, he says, all a bit more complicated than that!
