Unusually for Philip, this painting does not include the horizon, because we’re looking down, over the esplanade railings. And, although it’s been a sunny day and still is, it’s mid October. So it’s unlikely that these deckchairs have had this much attention all day. But these shadows are as wild as a bunch of partying Bambara gazelle headdresses from Mali, like the one in Philip’s collection. Sometimes an artist’s mind just works like that. At least, this one’s does.
