Around the time of Philip's 60th birthday, his parents were still hale and hearty enough to help set up this scene. They carried deckchairs to the beach, one for each decade of his life, and then acted as models while the filigree ironwork of the West Pier, a clear sky and a sparkling sea hung in the haze like a theatre backdrop and a solitary seagull exited stage right. The award winning comedian Matt Lucas so liked this painting that it now hangs in pride of place in his London appartment.
